Every year since the beginning of recorded history, something magical happens in eastern North Carolina. Thousands of migratory birds arrive from the Alaskan tundra to spend the winter on the lakes and sounds, creating a spectacular display of nature’s beauty from early in November until the end of February. This is in addition to the hundreds of species of wildlife that inhabit this region year-around, including the White-Tail Deer, Black Bear, and oodles of songbirds and shorebirds. Visitors to the region can easily experience the wildlife in their natural setting, especially on our national wildlife refuges and state parks. In Hyde County, two of the best places to have a wildlife experience are Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge around Lake Mattamuskeet, and the Pungo Unit of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, around Pungo Lake. The Mattamuskeet Foundation is capturing the natural beauty of the wildlife in the region in its “Winter Day” video series. We invite you to sample the videos and order copies for yourself and as gifts for your friends. The proceeds from this project go to support expansion of the series and other educational programs of the Mattamuskeet Foundation.
